Who are the hackers?

Hacker groups that attack or steal, some estimates say there are as many as 6,000 of such groups online with about 50,000 “bad actors” around the world drifting in and out of them, are a major threat, but the goals, methods and effectiveness of these groups varies widely.

When they’re angry, they hack into business and government systems to steal confidential data in order to expose information about their targets, or they simply disrupt them with denial-of-service attacks. These are the hackers with a cause, the “hacktivists” like the shadowy but well publicised Anonymous or the short lived Lulz Security group (which claimed to have just six members and just joined forces with Anonymous).

Over the years, Anonymous is believed to have hit targets that include the Church of Scientology, the Support Online Hip Hop website, the No Cussing Club website and posted pornographic videos disguised as children’s videos onto YouTube.

Report: Morgan Stanley warns 34,000 clients of data breach

Morgan Stanley Smith Barney has warned 34,000 customers that their addresses, account and tax ID numbers, and other data–including Social Security numbers for some–may have been stolen, the Credit.com news site reported today.

The data was reportedly on two CD-ROM discs that were password-protected but not encrypted, according to two letters Morgan Stanley sent to customers on June 24. The package containing the CDs was intact when it arrived at the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance but the CDs were missing when the package arrived on the desk of its intended recipient, Jim Wiggins, a Morgan Stanley Smith Barney spokesman told Credit.com.

Lian-Li PC-V600 Brings More Aluminum to High-End PC Cases

 

Lian-Li is no stranger to PC enthusiasts; they’re well known as a maker of computer cases at several price points. One place they excel, however, is at the moderately high-end; as the new PC-V600 shows, high-end doesn’t have to mean low class.

Samsung C27A750 27” Central Station Wireless Monitor Review

During this year’s CES, Samsung debuted their Central Station technology which promised to combine an all in one connectivity and networking hub into a high performance monitor.   This centralized approach will surely appeal to notebook, tablet and netbook users since it can expand screen real estate while eliminating the need to attach unwanted wires  to an otherwise quick setup.  One of the first products to feature Central Station technology is the C27A750 27” monitor.

Verizon iPhone 4 accounts for 32% of all US iPhone 4 traffic

After just four months on the market, the iPhone 4 on Verizon makes up nearly a third of the U.S. iPhone 4 market, according to one analytics firm.

Mobile analytics firm Localytics published a report on on Thursday charting the growth of the Verizon iPhone 4 since it launched in February, as noted by Brad Reed of Network World. The report compiles data from app usage during the last week of the month to reflect each carrier’s market share.

As of July 1, Verizon’s share of all U.S. iPhone 4 traffic stands at 32 percent, compared to AT&T’s 68 percent share. According to the report, the carrier’s presence quickly jumped to a 20 percent share shortly after launch before slowing down to modest gains in the spring. Read full article…
